Directions On How To Turn Off/On customer valve:

To protect from flooding and to save on your water bill, most meters in Silverton have a customer shut-off valve on your side of the meter.  If your meter does not please contact Public Works Maintenance at 503-873-6359.

Check For Leaks:

• Once water is off and there is no water running in the home (ex: dish washer or laundry) activate the meter using a flashlight.
• Observe the rate of flow display screen
• An observed rate reading of greater than 0.000 corresponds to water moving through the meter. If all water has been shut off then a leak may exist in your water system at some point between your water meter and your facets and other water fixtures.
• Contact a license plumber or leak detection agency to help identify and remedy the problem as soon as possible to avoid excessive billing.

Who Fixes My Leak?

• If the leak occurred on the customer’s side of the meter the homeowner will be responsible for any repairs.
• If the leak occurs around the meter or on the City’s side of the meter the City of Silverton will do those repairs.

My Leak Is Repaired, How Will This Effect My Bill?

• Once the leak is permanently repaired fill out a Leak Adjustment Request Form with any receipts, invoices from a plumber and photos of the leak and repair.
• Once we get the request form the City will verify that there is no leak, an assessment of your account history will be taken to see if an adjustment can be made.
• If repairs are not made in a timely manner Utility Billing may not be able to make an adjustment to your bill.

Preventative Maintenance:

• Check sprinkler systems before summer use.
• Drain supply lines to water sprinklers and swimming pools in advance of freezing conditions.
• When cold weather approaches, disconnect all hoses from faucets and insulate exposed plumbing. Open cabinets when the temperature drops, to encourage air circulation and reduce the risk of freezing.
• If temperatures are below freezing, turn on your faucet, and let the water drip throughout the day and night.
