April 1, 2026 | Update on Fluoridation of City Water

April 1, 2026

Fluoridation system testing began on Tuesday, March 10, and fine-tuning is still in progress. After initial testing and calibration of the fluoridation system, it was determined that additional components are needed to ensure compatibility with the City’s existing infrastructure. The required parts are expected to arrive at the Water Treatment Plant by Thursday, April 2. TMG consultants are scheduled to install the components and resume system testing on Monday, April 6.

If testing and calibration proceed as planned, the City expects the system to be fully operational by April 10.

In accordance with Resolution 646 (1972), fluoride is anticipated to be present in the City of Silverton’s drinking water supply as soon as the system is fully operational.

March 4, 2026

Installation of the City’s new fluoridation equipment has been completed at the Water Treatment Plant. System testing will begin on Tuesday, March 10. Fluoride will be present in the City of Silverton’s drinking water supply following testing and may be detected as early as March 10 or March 11, 2026, in accordance with Resolution 646 (1972).

The City appreciates the community’s patience throughout the equipment replacement and installation process. For more information about fluoride and local water quality, please visit Water Quality Division | Silverton, OR.

January 2026

Once installation is complete, fluoride is anticipated to be restored to the City’s drinking water supply by mid-February, in accordance with Resolution 646 (1972). The City will provide additional communication confirming the exact restoration date once installation and system testing are finalized.

Any further updates will be shared in a timely manner as the project progresses. For more information about fluoride and local water quality, visit Water Quality Division | Silverton, OR.

July 2025

While the drinking water in the City of Silverton is fluoridated, as per Resolution 646 (1972), the fluoride system at the Water Treatment Plant is currently out of operation. In March 2025, the City Council approved funding to purchase a new fluoridation system. The equipment has been procured, and installation is currently anticipated to occur in late November 2025, pending supply chain timelines that remain outside the City’s control. This timeline is subject to change. The City of Silverton's water is not currently fluoridated.

March 2025

At City Council meetings earlier this year, it was communicated that the City of Silverton’s fluoridation system, which adds fluoride to city water, had been inoperable since the end of 2024. This update is to correct that communication. The last date of fluoridation of the City’s water was February 03, 2023.

At the March 19, 2025, City Council meeting, the City Council approved Transfer Resolution 25-06, which allows up to $166,768 to be expended to purchase a new fluoridation system to be installed at the City’s Water Treatment Plant. The City has procured the equipment, but there is no exact timeline for delivery and installation, although staff anticipate it to take a few months to complete.

The City will share more details as they become known.
