The Citizen's Academy
The Silverton Police Department launched its first-ever Citizen's Academy in the fall of 2024 — an eight-week program designed to strengthen the connection between the department and the community. The inaugural class welcomed a diverse group of participants, including local business owners, healthcare and education professionals, and members of the faith community.
The second session took place in the spring of 2025, running from April 2 to May 21. Classes were held weekly, featuring both classroom instruction and field activities, including a visit to Metcom 911. Interest in the program was strong, with over 30 applications submitted for just 12 available spots. Participants ranged in age from 19 to 79 and represented a wide range of backgrounds, including education, agriculture, and individuals considering careers in law enforcement.
Police Chief Todd Engstrom remains dedicated to enhancing community awareness, promoting transparency, and building lasting trust between the Silverton Police Department and the community it serves. These priorities are at the heart of the Citizen's Academy, which offers participants hands-on experiences such as one-on-one firearms instruction, presentations on records management, evidence procedures, use of force policies, vehicle pursuits, traffic stops, and an overview of local crime statistics, among other topics.
The Silverton Police Department looks forward to hosting its next Citizen's Academy this fall, Tuesday evenings from September 18 through October 27, 2026. Applications will open on July 15 and close on August 7, with selected participants being notified on August 14. This session will feature four additional classes, including a tour of the Marion County jail and a day at the firearms range, providing attendees with an even more in-depth look at law enforcement operations. Participants are expected to attend at least seven of the eight classes and complete a ride-along with a Silverton police officer during the program.
