The City of Silverton has announced the local winners of the 2026 If I Were Mayor Student Contest, a statewide program designed to encourage youth engagement in local government and civic leadership. The annual contest invites students to share their ideas, creativity, and perspectives on community leadership through essays, posters, and video submissions. Submissions were reviewed by members of the Silverton City Council and City staff, with entries evaluated based on originality, relevance to the contest theme, and overall presentation. The 2026 City of Silverton “If I Were Mayor” Student Contest winners are:
- Poster Contest (Grades 4–5)

The City of Silverton thanks all participating students, teachers, and families for supporting youth civic engagement and helping inspire the next generation of community leaders. Mayor Jason Freilinger will recognize the local winners during the June 3 City Council meeting and present certificates honoring their achievements.
April 1, 2026 | If I Were Mayor - Student Contest 2026
We have an exciting opportunity for all of you to share your creativity and ideas with the City of Silverton! The 2026 "If I Were Mayor..." Contest is officially open! Here’s how you can participate:
- 4th and 5th Graders: You can create a poster using any art medium you like—paint, crayons, 3D art, you name it! Just take a photo of your masterpiece and save it as a PNG, JPEG, or PDF.
- 6th through 8th Graders: We’re looking for essays between 800 to 1,000+ words. Show off your writing skills and let us know what you’d do as mayor!
- High School Students: This is your chance to make a digital media presentation that’s 1 to 3 minutes long. Be creative and show us your vision for the city! Upload the video to Vimeo or YouTube and share the link in your submission.
Prizes include a pizza party for their classroom with Mayor Freilinger and a recognition from the City Council at an upcoming meeting.
The deadline to submit your entry is May 1, 2026. So, get creative and share your ideas for what you would do as Mayor of Silverton!
